A pithy comic strip about life, love, lust and puthy cats.

Extra, Extra!

You sacrifice and sacrifice…

By Jimmy Johnson

July 7, 2011

This is from 10 years ago today. I always liked it. I wasn’t coloring the strips myself at that time; the squash should be yellow! Who cares what happens to zucchini? I did notice back in my traveling days that “squash” in European vegetable markets (And there were so many!) meant zucchini. I did not see much yellow squash there. If you follow the link above, the strips that follow are worthwhile, I think.

One of my favorites, Jimmy. My ex and I went through a heavy gardening stage when we moved from an apartment to a house. It was newly built in a new section of subdivision. So we had a blank slate to fill in. I swear the developer must have buried every large chunk of limestone in our yard. I had to resort to using a pick in a lot of places.

Glad to see you posting here again. Hope things are going better, weatherwise.

In the late 1970s we lived a few blocks outside of Paris in Levallois-Perret, then a workers’ town. One day Ellen noticed a commotion at one of the vegetable stands in the open-air market: broccoli (evidently previously little-known there) had appeared. Folks were puzzled (translation: What is that, green cauliflower?) and, when Ellen bought some, asked her how it was to be cooked.

One of the most dreaded expressions on late August: “We have plenty of squash to give you!” I am not a squash eater. 🙂

One way to keep the squash harvest under control is to pick some of the flowers, stuff them and fry/saute them. Or, if you have to watch your cholesterol, they can also be steamed. This is one vegetable you’ll never see in a market because they’re so perishable. You need to cook them on the same day you pick them.

The only time of year people in small rural towns lock their vehicles. Otherwise, they will return to them to find the backseats full of squash.

Do you know what a “beatboxer” is? Long before the modern a cappella groups started incorporating guys imitating drums and other things, we called them strange kids trying to do vocal sound effects. No, we called them strange kids. Today with an MRI we can see how they do it.

I did click for the comics after today’s retro. Funny! I had forgotten the tick arc. Really good – especially the final one in the arc!

I don’t know about squash, in tomatoes, blossom-end rot is mostly a result of uneven watering.
And we knew it was a squash, Jimmy – because nothing stops zucchini from growing!

French for zucchini is “courgette.” When I lived in Nebraska, in a region where French influence is otherwise not obvious, that’s what they called zucchini.

What you typed was very reasonable. But, consider this, suppose you were to write a killer headline?
I mean, I don’t want to tell you how to run your blog, but what if you added a headline that makes people want
more? I mean You sacrifice and sacrifice… – Home of the comic strip Arlo & Janis is a
little boring. You might glance at Yahoo’s front page and note how they write article headlines to grab viewers interested.
You might try adding a video or a pic or two to get readers excited about everything’ve written.
In my opinion, it would bring your website a little livelier.
