Remember, I told you to keep in mind that this strip was drawn in the 80s, when they were still tamping the grave of the Age of Aquarius with shovels. Of course, when I drew this, we just thought we knew the meanings of hedonism and excess. The woman’s name, by the way, is Jasmine. She was to be a regular. The bar patron is a walk-on.
I resurrected the concept of Lost Key about ten years later, but with children in the lead roles. I think that strip had more potential, but it’s misplaced at the moment. If I ever find it, I’ll show it to you, too.

Well, one thing hasn’t changed: every generation thinks that it invented hedonism and excess.
Some generations do a better job of perfecting its hedonism and excess.
Hey, guys. I first thought 20 years was wrong too but then looked again to notice that Jimmy said he was posting this again with ORIGINAL commentary. So when he wrote the commentary it was 20 years ago for the strip.
That would explain the slightly junky outside—lovelily suggested by just a few apt props—gentle but apt!
The Age of Aquarius. . .as it happens we saw a production o “Hair” last night at our local professional theater. Some parts have not aged well, others seem immediately relevant today.
Very interesting reading about you, Mark. Thanks for the page.
I’m not surprised that “Hair” hasn’t aged well. It’s too topical, too much a product of its time to be relevant today, especially to an audience that didn’t live through that era. Rocky Horror, on the other hand, is still popular today, because it’s themes aren’t tied to any specific time or place.
The Keys and their motels still looked like that the last time I was down there three years ago.
Doubt hurricane improved them.
I don’t recall much about the 80s, but I remember the late 60s and early 70s extremely clearly.
Of course, maybe I only think that I remember them well. I was REALLY part of the scene at that time, and …
You get the idea.
Did the male character in these panels later serve as a template for Gene’s father in law?
Gus looked a lot different when he first appeared. Guess being a single dad of two girls will age you fast.

You also have to be old enough to remember Bogart did
Key Largo – that makes it funnier.
Knowing Jimmy is a buffet fan explains a lot. Like the bike.
I clicked on your new link below the cartoon and it says the page is not found. The regular link you have to go to the current day’s cartoon does still work. Maybe it’s just my computer, but just in case not, thought I’d let you know.
Or was that link a vestige from the original post?
Susan in NC, I think your second guess is the right one, since the normal link is the button with Janis on it.
The “recent comments” listing doesn’t include a title upon which to click, so one needs to scroll through all the comments here to see the latest. That’s OK now, but it’ll be less convenient as the number of comments increases.
The entire post is a duplicate post including the old links that don’t work.
Just read very long and interesting article on Big Pine Key and fact entire Key was destroyed by Irma.
Still no repairs a year later.
Or was that Lost Pine Key?
This one is right up there with Thaves.

Peace,
I stopped by ๐
I didn’t see you! ๐
That answers the question: does an Old Bear stop in the Village?.
Can anyone explain why Janis appears grumpy in today’s strip? I asked the MBH, but she couldn’t explain either.
How many dolphins have you ever seen at once?
