Hula Whoop

By Jimmy Johnson

July 12, 2004

When this comic strip first appeared in 2004, I received a snippy email that read, “I don’t know what that woman is doing, but it certainly isn’t the hula!” That’s one of the perks of being a cartoonist: aggravating such people. I will go so far as to admit the essence of the hula dance is fluid motion, but come on! It’s a static, four-panel comic strip! Besides, does anyone see the word “hula” anywhere in the strip? OK, I admit; it’s been 18 years. Sometimes they aggravate me.

Three word song from Frozen…Let It Go! lol. I know, it can be aggravating. But maybe you should have told her that is why Arlo was still having trouble coming up with the word? Janis didn’t know how. Or maybe he thought Janis was doing another type of dance that would make him throw his crossword away!

Some of the comments in the daily strips sometimes make me say: come on people its a comic! Always Good Work Jimmy.

While going through the random strips on GoComics yesterday, I found one where Jimmy had let the cat out of the bag about Arlo’s age. In it, Arlo thinks to himself “I am 43 years of age, and the pop hits are from Disney”, when Janis is humming music from Pocahontas. In real years, that would make him 67 years old now. Just slightly older than me.

My late husband worked at the Kahala Hilton when he was in hotel school. The hula dancers changed costumes in his beverage station with his help.

The comments on Go Comics are awful.

I know you have my back, Jackie, but the comments “there” are better than they used to be.

That is true, Jimmy. They are better now. I read some in desperation while the Village was locked

18 years?? – I’m still aggravated by comments I remember from a half-century ago. (Yes, I need help.)

I suppose motion marks at the sides of her hips could have made the glaringly obvious even more so for readers!!

There is a reason the other place is called “The Dark Side”

I did not have to get to the 4th panel to realize Janis
    was doing the Hula

Besides, it’s Janis’s *approximation* of a hula. One could say to the complainer: Sure, it’s not the best hula–but it looks far more like a hula than it does a bunny hop, a waltz, the twist, a foxtrot, or even Jules Feiffer’s modern dance lady. I got it right away. It’s funny! Janis even has her eyes closed, too– 🙂 She makin’ fun of Arlo–

Glad to hear that; first, it seems to mean things are going better than expected, and second, residential rehab (while a wonderful thing when you need it) just ain’t no fun atall.

What a good time for Arlo and Janis to visit. Plot is so true. Restaurants and families are struggling. Seafood has more than doubled in cost. But people love the little farm markets and boutique bistros now.

Arlo needs to bring Ludwig down.

Around here (and I live in the Midwest, where we do have a cow or two) it’s beef; went to our favorite Chinese restaurant last night, and the Mongolian Beef I ordered was $3 more the my usual Princess Prawns. That’s reversed from the norm there.

“That woman….” That woman?!? That makes it obvious that the commenter does NOT respect Janis and, therefore, is not worthy of time or attention. Hmph.

Hope we can move along from the soap opera with G&ML and get back to A&J. The restaurant-business-is difficult-and-not-profitable story is neither humorous nor philosophical and is, by now, trite.
    Sorry, JJ.

Some of us have been reading since Gene was a kid. It’s nice to check in once in a while and see how his family is doing. If we don’t, I start to wonder. So this arc may not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it.

I’ve enjoyed it too! I actually wondered aloud why they were going home so soon – didn’t Gene still need help? My husband pointed out they needed to go home to the cat. Couldn’t argue with that!

Pardon my beg to differment, but in my oh, so very humble opinion you could not be more mistaken – on each & every point.

More of the kids, please, Jimmy.

Re 7-30-21 retro cartoon: Arlo would have obviously caught on faster if Janis had donned the grass skirt hanging in the closet next to her lederhosen. However, the coconut shell bra would likely have been too much to expect on the spur of the moment.

Jackie was doing well enough (and improving) yesterday for me to feel comfortable not going to Tulsa today. Yesterday was my fifth 180-mile roundtrip of the week. I can remember a time when I would have gladly driven one of those trips just to eat a nice dinner. Now, not so much.

Jimmy captured the seductive nature of the hip thrust to the side. What is there about that move?

Finally on my way home after my worst nightmare hospital stay. I kept waiting for the leeches to appear, the blood letting occurred every 4 hours.

Finally my orthopedist partner sprang me and I will be home soon. She said she agreed my side effects were not present at home, to go home, eat my healthy food and manage my meds, vitals and activities. Thank God
