A pithy comic strip about life, love, lust and puthy cats.

Extra, Extra!

The Perfect Man

By Jimmy Johnson

Yesterday, July 29, was the anniversary of the debut of Arlo & Janis in newspapers. I’m not going to say how long ago that was, because it makes the strip and myself sound old, but the Worldwide Web was just a gleam in some programmers’ eyes. I did realize this: I can now say, for the first time, that I’ve been drawing the strip for more than half my life. In honor of this inauspicious event, I will be showing older material here all week long, maybe longer. It looks weird, but some of it actually is pretty funny. I hope you enjoy our Week of Restrospection!

Jimmy: “Yesterday, July 29, was the anniversary of the debut of Arlo & Janis in newspapers.”

SumYungDood: “Huh? Newspapers? And what’s that big thing Arlo is holding in the cartoon?”

Yes, it has been a few years.

It looks like Arlo got a nose job between frames 1 and 4. Your drawings have certainly come a long way, but your humor gets better and better.

I actually prefer the look of the earlier/younger Arlo. the long hair reminds me of when I had a full head of long hair, too.

Congratulations! Coincidentally, August 3rd will mark the 3-year anniversary of your last Kickstarter getting funded. You know, the one that offered a book with older material as a reward? Maybe you can add an update there too. The last update was almost 2 years ago.

Were any of you in high school marching bands? I was, but we didn’t march as well as this group from Japan:

I can believe they’re the best in the world!

BTW, one of the girls has a prosthetic leg below her knee. Can you find her? Could you ever keep up with her?

Lordy. Almost wish I hadn’t dropped in. Arlo and Janis is always funny. If you don’t see the humor it is because it takes intelligence to get the joke usually. Over some heads?

Furthermore, consider your $$$$ a donation. I know I do. I donated quite generously for Jimmy. It wasn’t a purchase but a charitable donation. If I ever get released from the prison of cancer I plan to go visit the church.

In the meantime Jimmy if your church has a prayer list ask they pray for me and I will consider myself compensated. I would prefer to marry Ghost there honestly but not sure I can ever travel again.

Oh yes, Ghost is the perfect man but he looks at beautiful women all day.

Jackie, I do pray that you are released from that cancerous cell. For someone I only know by the grace of some electrons, ones and zeros, I can say that you seem to do the best one can possibly do at living well when life is hard. The only person I’ve ever seen do better, and I watched her for years, was my mother. In my book, there isn’t any better company. Keep living for the sake of life!

You are included in my prayers as well. A couple of good friends are fighting this terrible disease and it is a terrible monster to battle. I not only pray for it’s eradication, but that you will continue to be able to have a positive attitude and on days when that is impossible, the strength to carry on thru it.

      Peace

Congrats on both milestones, Jimmy. And thanks for the many laughs and sometimes “Ouches!” when you hit really close along the way. May the ink from your pen continue to grace the bristol and the pixels on your screen dance to your command for a long time to come. Long live Arlo & Janis!

=v= When this strip debuted, I was working at my first “real” job out of college, on something that could mark up text to create printed documents. Our team created a little previewer so you could sort of see a formatted document on the screen, with links to other documents. These were based on a spec called Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), it worked great, but most of the features worked only on the computers my company sold.

Why am I telling you this? Because the Worldwide Web was built on the same technology, 4 years later, as a markup language that was also an SGML variant. The main difference is that it worked on computers that multiple companies sold, and that made it worldwide whereas our previewer system pretty much stayed inside the company.

Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is fundamental and everything.
Nevertheless think about if you added some great graphics or video clips to give your posts
more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and video clips, this
site could undeniably be one of the very best in its niche.
    Wonderful blog!

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into
any problems of plagorism or copyright violation? My blog has a lot of
completely unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but
it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the
internet without my permission. Do you know any solutions to
help stop content from being ripped off? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
