There’s nothing like starting a series of classic cartoons on a Friday! Things still are in a bit of a holding pattern here at arloandjanis.com, but I’ve been thinking about a few things. I hope we’ll have a little fun next week. I know, I know. I say things like that all the time, but sometimes they come to pass. Meanwhile, I’m taking a few days off to visit the Gulf and eat some seafood. Happy Washington’s Birthday!

Ghost: Definitely not a hawk’s beak. Not really an IDable bird. Not sure what the OKDOT has in mind. Does OK have a state bird? Will go see. Peace,
Ghost: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (Muscivora forficata) now Tyrannus forficatus. Should have thought of that, since I knew of them, though have never seen one.
/ H.S. driving, as noted here earlier, I rode subways and buses and real passenger trains as a kid and overseas. Learned to drive at 25 or 26 in Ann Arbor when we moved from town to a U MI wildlife reserve out of town. Elaine, as a teen in Brewster, NY, had learned to drive from her Dad, and thought it would be best for our marriage if I learned in the A.A. HS driver’s ed program.
Peace,
Ghost: I read your list of cars to Bob and started a flood of memories. He learned to drive on a 49 Chevy with a sticky clutch. He had a 58 Plymouth Belvedere with push-button transmission and 318 engine; at some point he decided to redecorate it – painted the body burgundy (using a brush) and spray-painted the chrome black.
First car was obtained when I entered grad school. It was my dad’s ’57 Chevy, off-white over brownish orange. In ’68, when we bought a new, end-of-the-model-year Chevy of similar color, it was called “sierra gold and cream”. Merchandizing….
After perusing some pictures and comparing grilles, Bob’s Plymouth was probably a 57.
A ’51 Pontiac hardtop. A hand-me-down from my older brother. Blew the engine about 6 months later.
Ghost, you and I drove 57 Cheviot in high school? Mine was that flamingo peachy color so popular in late 50s with white and every additional thing they could hang. It attracted boys like fly paper.
They all popped the hood and hung over motor like so many ticks on a hound dog. I was popular but only one guy got to drive it besides me. Star running back half native American. His little brother tells me he has had seven or eight wives!
I typed Mercury. What is that Hal printed?
Jackie, Hal should have a sheepish grin. This is a Cheviot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheviot_sheep

I’m glad that Jimmy recognized The Indispensable Man individually and not just as part of the odious Presidents Day.
Observing Washington’s birthday should have never been eliminated. It’s a disgrace of the highest order.
To make the utter disrespect even worse, I can’t recall the last time that I saw a calendar that stated his birthday.
“Former President Abraham Lincoln has earned the No. 1 spot since 2000, when C-SPAN conducted its first Historians Survey of Presidential Leadership.”
Madness.
No one else besides Washington can ever be first.
Washington is the pinnacle, and everyone else follows, and they follow at a far distance.
That’s politics, too.
First car, at age 24: A used ’50 Pontiac Silver Streak sedan. It sufficed until we left A.A. for Bemidji, among other things because we figured we didn’t want to let the sub-zero temps in through the rusting-out floor. Actually bought a new Rambler wagon with cash, leaving a few hundred in our checking acct. Then Jeep Wagoneers [when they were full-length station wagons, Toyota Corona, Subaru sedan [before Toyota had front-wheel drive], other small Toyotas, ’96 Camry, Corolla [for some time we needed 2 cars], ’03 Camry, early Prius, current Prius. Son totaled the first Jeep, Elaine totaled the Corolla, and the Rambler and 2nd Jeep we traded in. All others = given to our kids. None bought on time.
Bedtime. Peace,
The Edward Jones calendar in my kitchen lists both Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays, both of which are verifiable from historical records, and at least one other which is not, either as to actual date, actual year, or actual place.
Peace,

Great to hear that at least one still has them. Thanks.
Anyone have a clue on this: I had, on IE7, a little magnification tab/menu at the far lower right on the screen. I could hit it and cycle 100% – 125% – 150% – 100% etc. If I hit the left part, a menu appeared with magnifications up to 400%. Earlier this evening, I managed to hit some apparently wrong key(s), and that lower right tab/menu disappeared. Likely, I hit something near the left shift key – maybe more than one key.
Yes, there are other ways to magnify the screen, but not at all conveniently when I want to go back and forth quite often, as when inspecting potential eBay lots and returning to the search results to find another lot of interest to inspect.
‘Twas I, above.
If I recall, our little magnetic calendar from Thrivent also has Lincoln, Washington, and the combined natal anniversaries noted.
Thanks, Ghost!
Maybe that is what I get for not reading everything everyday. 😉
Normally, I’m happy that I’m not attached to any grapevine, but occasionally I find I’ve missed out on something.
Mentioning issues that people disagree about without being disagreeable is at the heart of this Village. Else we’d never be able to discuss recipes, favorite cars, pets, wildlife, or even whether Auburn is inherently superior to ‘Bama.
c e-p:
If you go to “Recent Items” (on Apple)(PCs have similar) you may be able to
retrieve that program, I have under similar circumstances.
First was 50 Pontiac Super Chief straight eight. When I sold the car it was a case of two
fools meeting – I did not get enough and he paid too much.
Oops. To get the magnification menu, I hit the right side of the little rectangular tab, not the left side.

It’s raining on that central Kenya river. That river has gone a meter shallower over the last several weeks. Used to have hippos in it. Wonder if this is the end of the dry season? Cannot remember offhand what time of year we were there in ’87[?], but it was more than two weeks, so must have been during summer months here.
